THE ARTIST

Marguerite Morin

Marguerite Morin (b. 2002) is a Franco-Ontarian artist who was raised in the small town of Kirkland Lake in Northern Ontario. Today, she still lives in the surrounding areas of this small, isolated village.

She left these familiar grounds in 2020 to begin her studies in visual arts at the University of Ottawa, from where she obtained her bachelor's degree in 2024. Living in Ottawa allowed her to discover a life that is different from the one she knew growing up in Northern Ontario. Ottawa's urban setting introduced the artist to a cement-based life, allowing her to further develop a thesis on the place of humanity when "separated" from trees, rivers, and lakes. Having grown up in the countryside, the countless landscapes of her childhood became landmarks that shaped her identity. Fascinated by the magnitude of the natural world in which she was raised, she compares the significance of human existence next to everything around us.

In her current practice, Morin uses oil painting to reflect on how the environment that we inhabit shapes our identity. In the greenery of the north, people from isolated villages share lives similar to hers. We exist among the wind, among the trees, among the shores.
